After years of creating mountain bike expeditions in remote parts of the world we decided it was time to look into creating a road experience. Luckily, our partners Progetto Avventura are Italian! When we posed the question to them, “Where could we create the most unique road ride?”, “Sicilia!” was the answer.
Karl and Scotty from our historic local bike shop, Oak Bay Bikes (www.oakbaybikes.com), teamed up with us to create this tour. In April 2010, we arrived in Palermo where we were met by the Massimo of Progetto Avventura. We were greeted immediately with an incredible afternoon of riding on remote, classic routes flanked by vineyards. Huge flocks of sheep were our only concern as cars were few and far between. We ended the day with a breathtaking (literally and figuratively) 600 meter climb up into Erice, a hilltop village on the North Coast of the island. We were sold – ten more days of this and what else could be ask for?!
Well, as we quickly found out, Sicily has a lot more to offer both on and off the bike: vineyards, beachside towns, hilltop villages, the incredible Mt. Etna, extraordinary Greek ruins, remote alpine passes, and hip Mediterranean coastal resorts – sometimes all in the same day!
Sicily blew us away and we can’t wait to return each spring to this wonderful part of the world.
